If you have a chipped, cracked, or decayed tooth, you may be experiencing pain and exposing your tooth to potential further damage. Dental crowns can protect teeth by covering the entire exposed portion of your tooth. These restorations can be used to repair damaged teeth, restore natural size and shape, or to cover fillings. Patients in Baton Rouge, LA, can receive a customized dental crown in just two appointments at Affordable Smiles. Depending on your needs and goals, we can provide crowns composed of a variety of materials such as zirconia and IPS e.max®. Dr. Billy F. Booty, Jr. has helped many patients choose the right type of crown and can provide an in-depth evaluation to help you determine the best option to restore your smile.
At Affordable Smiles, it is our priority to ensure that our patients receive the highest level of care and are satisfied with their results.
What is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown—also known as a cap—can restore the visible portion of your tooth to reestablish the natural structure and prevent further damage. These restorations can also be used to anchor each side of a dental bridge.
Dr. Booty offers dental crowns available in several materials including:
- These all-ceramic crowns are not only durable but provide an exceptionally realistic appearance due to their translucent quality. Zirconia is typically recommended for front teeth.
- IPS e.max
- The glass ceramic material of these restorations provides high-quality aesthetic results as well as added strength. IPS e.max crowns are often recommended for placement with dental implants or for repairing front teeth.
- Porcelain Fused to Metal
- The metal structure of these crowns provides improved durability while retaining the cosmetic benefits of all-porcelain restorations. However, in some cases, the porcelain can chip or the underlying metal may become exposed if your gum lines begin to recede.
- While metal crowns require less alteration to the natural tooth structure and typically cost less, they do not offer the cosmetic advantages of other materials. These restorations are usually placed on teeth at the back of the mouth.
Depending on the location of the tooth being treated as well as your cosmetic goals, Dr. Booty can help you determine the best material for your crown.
Placing Your Restoration
Your dental crown placement will require two appointments. During the first portion of the procedure, the doctor will prepare the tooth by gently removing any damage. You may elect to receive oral conscious or nitrous oxide sedation for your comfort. Dr. Booty will then reshape the tooth and take an impression which will be used to create your custom-made restoration. The impression will be sent out to a trusted lab for fabrication.
You will be provided with a temporary dental crown until your permanent restoration is ready. Once complete, you will return to our office for the placement portion of the procedure. Dr. Booty will secure your crown with dental cement for durable, long-lasting results.
